18th century local stone house in sunny Lagrasse
This was our way of experiencing this beautiful part of France for ourselves. We bought a pretty village house for romantic getaways and family holidays, taking advantage of the al fresco dining at the village's excellent restaurants and its traditional French café. We indulged in breakfasts from the boulangerie/patisserie, visited the exquisite abbey, went river swimming in the crystal clear waters and sunbathed on the village's very own pebble beach.
All just thirty seconds from our front door!

The Medieval Village of Lagrasse
My family and I spend a great deal of our time in the south of France in the Aude region,
hidden away in the hills of the Corbières, half an hour from the cities of Carcassonne and Narbonne and close to the gorgeous Mediterranean sea, in what the French tourist board has classed as “one of the most beautiful villages in France”. Time stands still in this extraordinary place: Lagrasse is a medieval marvel, replete with cobbled streets, golden stone houses and quiet squares. It has an abbey commissioned in the 8th century by Charlemagne which overlooks the river Orbière where, during the summer months, villagers young and old swim in the crystal clear waters. Two old stone bridges span the river and give access to the garrigue and the green hills beyond.

LAGRASSE AND THE CORBIÈRES
Life in the deep south of France
Welcome to my website.
My name is Stuart Benton and I am the author of the book 'Lagrasse and the Corbières'.
From here you can enjoy a preview of some of the chapters from the book with links to the various sites that sell it.
The purpose of this website is not just to generate interest in the book 'Lagrasse and the Corbières',
but also to explore in words and pictures this awe-inspiring region of the south-west of France.
On this website, you can indulge your senses from afar, dip a toe in the cool, clear rivers of the Corbières, get a taste
of this region’s mouth-watering gastronomy and be caressed by the incredible sensation of experiencing
what it is like to enjoy living in deepest France - or as a friend here so poetically phrased it:
“Doing gentle nothingness”.
